Setup/Gear/Manufacturer of Instruments:

I use a Selmer Reference 54 Alto Sax with a Vandoren Optimum AL3 and a Vandoren MO Ligature. My Tenor Saxophone is a Selmer MarkVII with a Vandoren Optimum TL4 and Optimum Ligature. I have a Selmer Conservatory Oboe and use Stuart Dunkel reeds.

Why did you begin studying music?

I began studying music when I was 2. I was adopted from China and my mom is a music teacher. I would not talk and was very withdrawn, so my mom began working with me on the violin and then added piano to try to get me to express myself and talk. [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]

What are you doing with music right now?

Right now as a High School Junior, I have begun focusing on just two instruments. I had been playing fourteen! I have been playing with my school Wind Ensemble, Marching band, and Jazz Band. The most exciting thing I have done this summer is attend the Saxophone program with Dr Murphy and Prof Walsh at Indiana University School of Music. In August, I will be attending the Grammy Foundation New York Grammy camp; which should be very exciting!

Who are some of your influences?

My biggest influence of course is my mom, but I am also influenced by teachers like Mrs Schroeder. Both of them work hard and give 100% no matter what they are doing. Though, the biggest lesson is how they give back to people in need.

Who do you/have you studied with?

I started studying with my mom, who was a music teacher. Then I studied violin and viola with Vickie Lottes from SIUE. I started private saxophone lessons with Dr. Nathan Mandel two years ago and it really has motivated me to focus on this instrument.

What do you plan on doing with music in the future?

In the near future, I would like to attend Indiana University or Eastman School of Music. After that, I plan to work as a studio musician.

Any additional information you would like to add?

My audition video was chosen by D’Addario Woodwinds for March student of the month finalist. I entered the contest as a fundraiser for the band. I went on to win the monthly competition of online voting and now I am in the Grand Finals and hope to win the online voting because if I win my high school band program will win.
