Why did you begin studying music?
I was 15 years old and had just started to play the saxophone and was living in the U.S.A as an exchange student. Music had always been a big part of my life but at this time I decided I really wanted to try to be a professional musician. So I thought the best thing was to get really well educated as you would do in any subject you are serious about and wan’t to make your profession.
Saxophonist Philip Cassius
Located in Stockholm, Sweden
What are you doing with music now?
Right now I am studying Jazz saxophone in whats called Folkhögskola in Sweden which would translate in the U.S to community college/college. We play mainly jazz but also some Swedish folk music and soul, funk etc.
I also play in a Latin band in the Stockholm area which I think is a lot of fun. Recently I also started to teach some extra hours every week subbing for an old teacher of mine.
Who are some of your influences?
Oh I got so many influences from many different genres. But to name a few:
Eddie Money, Bruce Springsteen, Mike Oldfield, Brian Culbertson, Jamie Walters, Phil Collins, Mike Mainieri, Mats Öberg.
Sax players: Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Dexter Gordon, Eric Marienthal, Andy Snitzer, Brandon Fields, Dave Koz, Stanley Turrentine, Ernie Watts, Tom Scott, Gato Barbieri, Ed Calle, Michael Lington, Eddie Harris, Robert Nordmark, Clarence Clemons.
Who have you studied with?
For three years in High school my sax teacher was Robert Nordmark. Incredible musician, teacher and person.
Also studied with Mats Holmqvist, Jeff Sizer, Eric Marienthal, Jim Leopardo, Magnus Svedberg, Johan Löfcrantz.
What would you like to do with music in the future?
Ah I have so many plans…
I wan’t to compose original music and see if there is people out there that would enjoy my music. I have a sound in my head that I wan’t to get out and hopefully when I have all the musical tools in the bag it will open more and more.
I like to keep my mind open and like to play everything from folk to pop and jazz. Both as a bandleader and sideman. Try to get as much work as I can.
