Teen Jazz Artists
Cody Norling - Saxophone
Cody Norling, 16 years old
Champlin, Minnesota
Champlin Park
Saxophone, playing 6 years
some clarinet
I play on a Selmer Paris Reference 54 kookaburra with a Super Session "E"
mouthpiece. I use Rico Jazz Select reeds and a Vandoren Optimum ligature. I've
spent a lot of time to find this set-up that i like.
Before i started saxophone i really wasn't much into music. When i
started playing sax i originally fell in love with the old "Big Bands" of the
'30s and '40s. After a year or so i discovered more "Bop" style jazz and have
been there ever since. Also, = I won an outstanding soloist award at the Eau-Clair High School Jazz
Festival.
Right now i am studying jazz with Greg Keel at McPhail Center of the Arts
in Minneapolis. I also have a small combo of usually sax, piano, bass, and
drums, but a lot of the time is just sax and piano. I'm in the process of
recording a sax and piano duet album with standards such as: "Take-5"
"Summertime" "Now's The Time" and a few others yet to be determined. I
am playing tenor saxophone with the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band and I'm studing
under Greg Keel at the Mcphail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis.
When i was "in love" with the swings days, my hero was a sax player
by the name of Jimmy Dorsey. I bought a ton of his CDs and his method book and i
emulated his style. Since i started to branch out from the swing style i've
discovered that i really strive to be like Cannonball Adderly. I also enjoy Paul
Desomond, Jackie Mclean, Phil Woods, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Rollins, Art Pepper,
Joe Henderson, Johnny Grifffin, and Johnny Hodges, to name a few.
For the first years of my playing i studied with Gus Sandburg, a
tenor player with Jack's Brass Band. Then i took a few lessons with Brain
Grivna, who played lead alto with Buddy Rich. Now i am studying with an amazing
saxophonist named Greg Keel. Greg has done countless great things in the jazz
world and has preformed with many musical greats.
I hope to go to either the University of Wiscoinsin-Eau Claire or the
University of Minnesota-Duluth and receive a degree in jazz performance or music
education. I also plan on going back to finish my masters and doctorate. I plan
on making music my career.
