Review of Elan Trotman’s Tropicality

On February 19, 2013, saxophonist Elan Trotman released his latest album, Tropicality, a fun, energetic project with an island influence. The album features a collections of covers and original compositions with guests on the album including Peter White, U-Nam, Nick Colionne, Serghio Jansen, Luis Conte, Lenny Castro, Jeff Lorber, Paul Brown, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ricky Lawson, Tony Moore, Lin Rountree and Alex Al.

The album opens with “Master Blaster”, an instrumental version of the lively Stevie Wonder composition. “Tradewinds” featuring Peter White follows, and then Jeff Lorber, Alex Al and Tony Moore step in to share their talents with “Bridgetown to Beantown.” Next is “Always with You” and then Bob Marley’s “Wait in Vain.” “A Time and Place” features the talents of Paul Brown while “Funkalypso” showcases Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. The closing song, Jobim’s “Wave,” features Trotman on flute.

Elan Trotman currently lives in Boston, but he is originally from Barbados. Tropicality was recorded in both Boston and Barbados as well as in Los Angeles. He has performed with artists such as Roberta Flack, Patti Austin, Phil Perry, Earl Klugh, Rick Braun, Brian McKnight, Jamie Fox, Gerald Veasely and Raul Midon. He has been awarded “Best Jazz Male” as part of the New England Urban Music Awards three times, the 2011 Barbados Music Awards Instrumentalist of the Year and he has twice been nominated for a Boston Music Award.

Tropicality is Elan’s sixth album as an artist. His previous albums include Love and Sax (2011) which reached #11 on the Billboard jazz charts with “Heaven in Your Eyes,” This Time Around (2009), A Reggae Christmas (2007), Let’s Have A Good Old Time (2005), and Memories – The Debut (2001).
